I plan to visit Nice around late may/early june 2010. I%26#39;m 19 years old and I will be backpacking through Europe, so the stay in Nice will be about 4-5 days and on a very limited budget (just enough to get by). What are some of the best things that I could do in and around Nice, and any hints or tips for someone my age. I intend to travel either alone or with one friend. I want to see some of the sights, hit the beach and just enjoy myself. No clubbing and no very expensive tours or anything.

Sorry I can%26#39;t help with any info. You might also want to post on another site like Lonely Planet%26#39;s travel forum, as most (but not all) of the frequent posters here have left their backpacking days behind them. Hopefully, you%26#39;ll still be able to get useful info

There are a couple of youth hostels in Nice, and I know of another in Cap d%26#39;Ail which is right on the sea front, but that might be a bit out of it for you. During summer, you often see people sleeping on the beach too, tho%26#39; I think officially it%26#39;s illegal.
As for things to see, it depends on your interests. But there%26#39;s no charge to walk along the Promenade des Anglais, through the old town, up to Castle Hill. I seem to recall that museums are now free (SelkieNice can confirm), and if so, then the Museum of Modern Art (MAMAC), the Matisse Museum and the Photograph Museum are 3 of my favourites.
For food, keep it cheap by buying from the supermarkets or markets and having picnics on the beach.
You should also, if you%26#39;re a student, get an International Student card before you set off and find out what it will entitle you to. Check out the website for the Pitchoun guide, which is put together by students every year:

It%26#39;s all in French, but you can get the gist using Google translate.

All the museums run by the Ville de Nice are free entry for everyone ie MAMAC modern art museum, Asian Art museum , Museum of Photography, Musee matisse, Archaeological museum, Musee terra Amata [prehistory] , Musee des beaux arts., musee d%26#39;art naif etc
The exception is musee marc Chagall as it doesn%26#39;t belong to the Ville de Nice
Nice is easy on a budget - lots of hostels and cheap hotels -and some budget hotels have the option of a small kitchenette to keep costs down.
Transport is cheap- one euro per journey on the bus and you can go for very long distances - eg into the mountains or along the coast for 2 hours
