Restaurant recommendation

I will be in Provence early Sept 2010 staying near Grasse and touring.

Can anyone give me details of a venue suitable for my silver wedding anniversary meal ( not Monaco prices thank you! )

I would love to eat some traditional provencal cuisine and am happy to pay up to 150 euro each as it is a special occasion meal

I would suggest St Paul de Vence as a suitable venue for your silver wedding anniversary. In September it will be a little less busy than in the main season, although there will still be tour buses visiting. There are many art galleries, and the views and setting are lovely, although the crowds and commercial feel can put people off. However, it also still has a village feel, with boules games going on in the square, just by the entrance to the place I would suggest for your celebration meal.

We had lunch at the Colombe D’Or there in December. We hadn’t booked, but arrived early lunchtime, and there was plenty of room. For your occasion of course you would book, and it might also be a good idea to confirm a couple of days beforehand.

The setting is a big part of a visit there; we couldn’t eat on the terrace in December, but maybe in September you might. But inside is fine, plus you have the pleasure of seeing some of the wonderful paintings while you eat. We sat below a Matisse, and could see others from our table. After our meal we wandered into the next room and enjoyed more paintings.

The food is fairly simple and traditional, with the rabbit and pasta being famous; the plain grilled fish and the rack of lamb are delicious (I’ve had the lamb). The hors d’oeuvres is enormous, almost a meal in itself; it is often advised by the waiters to share between two. We had wine by the glass, although their wine list is good, and they’ll happily bring big jugs of water if bottled isn’t wanted. Puddings are good. Service is also fine, and we had a wonderful time there. Prices didn’t seem too high for the pleasure we had; I can’t remember the cost, but we found it reasonable. Your budget would be more than enough!

The village itself is a good place to visit, and if you like modern art, the Fondation Maeght art museum would be a must. This is just along from th main car park; it cost around 11 euros entry when we were there. If you visit from Nice bus number 400 takes you there. If your accommodation hasn’t been booked yet, you might even consider staying overnight and making it a celebration dinner you don’t have to drive away from.

This visit would give you a good day out, either all day if including the museum, or just half a day if not. I think you would enjoy it, although I expect others will be along shortly with other ideas for you. Wherever you eat, have a wonderful celebration!
