I%26#39;m not sure where you%26#39;re getting your information but train prices for April 2010 are not yet available. When they are available, the TGV to Strasbourg will be the cheapest way. iDTGV fares start at 19€ when purchased in advance. How early in advance in not really always clear but I should start looking about 3-4 months before you want to travel:

Avoid whoever it is that is quoting you a price - what they are doing is the old Travel Agent trick of quoting you for a fully optioned 2nd class ticket at current prices. Wait until the tickets become available (start looking in Feb 2010) and book for yourself.
The same applies for any travel ticket anywhere in the world; tickets from Heathrow to the centre of London can be bought a year in advance from a travel agent at 3 times the price you could buy them yourself on the ground.

thanks for your suggestions...is it better to book in Australia before we go or is it better to book tickets when we arrive, say a day or 2 before we travel from Paris. I haven%26#39;t travelled overseas before, but I do want to pick up the best deals. Do you also have any advice on budget accommodation in Paris and Strasbourg. Thanks

Take the advice given by Sarastro (who knows what he%26#39;s talking about) and start looking 3 or 4 months before you want to travel, using www.idtgv.com
The cheap seats are sold first. Once they are gone, the prices keep going up!

Nick - thanks for the confidence.
I know the 3-4 month suggestion exceeds the 3 month PREM fare window but I recently read that iDTGV tickets may be purchased no earlier than 6 months in advance; pricing starting at 19€ and increasing as seats are sold.
I%26#39;m not sure schedules are available 6 months in advance but I should recommend that anyone wanting an inexpensive fare to start looking early:

The advice on advance booking also applies to rail travel by Eurostar between Paris and London. There are cheaper coach services between the two cities but they take the best part of a day rather than less than 2hrs 30 minutes.

Thanks for this information, I checked out the Web Address, tickets at the moment are available to March 2010, so will keep a lookout for April%26#39;s release. Compared with the price I was given in Australia $147 for 2nd class, these prices (19Euro)are fantastic. Thanks again

You have to keep in mind that these are not refundable and not exchangeable - you cannot change your plans without buying a new ticket. But thhat%26#39;s why they are cheap.
