Best Base for Touring Provence

We will be staying in Provence for a week in early September. We plan to rent a small apartment for the two of us.

We plan to do a fair amount of days trips by car: Aix, Arles, Avignon, Casis and the hill villages in the Luberon.

We want to base in a small village. Lourmain sounds wonderful especially with all the restaurants but St Remy seems more centrally located.

I%26#39;d appeciate any thoughts or suggestions

St Remy would be fine. You could also consider L%26#39;Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, which I think is more attractive than St Remy. As the name suggests, its centre is built on an island in the river Sorgue, so there is water flowing in a number of channels.

Hi Phillyfans,

We love Lourmarin, however, without knowing you personally, I would suggest St. Remy in a heartbeat. It is perfectly located for visiting the sites that you have mentioned AND has considerable Provencal atmosphere, is easily walkable, has really good food, and a wonderful market-day every Wednesday, as well as great Roman ruins nearby etc.. However,if, you would rather be in a more rural, but easily accesable location - I hope that you will consider Maussane-les-Alpilles which sits just below Les Baux, and is about a 12 - 15 minute drive from St. Remy via a gorgeous road thorugh les Alpilles, a beautifully rugged and craggy set of limestone hills.

PS - Let me know if you would like a copy of my Travellers Aid, it%26#39;s a Word doc. originally composed for friends who were visiting the region for the first time and contains info regarding many of what I consider to be the necessities for exploring the region. For us, it is only another 243 days until we leave for our annual stay in that Heaven on Earth that most folks call Provence - needless to say, we can hardly wait.

AphillesGal -- we are also planning a trip to Provence for next September. Could you email me your Word doc? I would appreciate it to much!

Hi there,

I%26#39;m jumping on the bandwagon! I%26#39;d love a copy too if you wouldn%26#39;t mind. We%26#39;ll be in Provence for 5 days in April and I%26#39;m having a difficult time narrowing down the list of places to go.
