Despite the %26#39;an awful place%26#39; thread I am looking forward to a daytrip to the city (from Paris), maybe even more so because I hear it%26#39;s %26#39;dirty and dangerous.%26#39; I%26#39;m probably not your average traveler in that I like to walk around taking pictures of street art more than go to museums when I visit a city. I also am more interested in the %26#39;hip%26#39; neighborhoods than the old ones. Any advice on where I should go in my ten hours? I know it%26#39;s not enough, but it will have to do for now.

Where you want to go is Cours Julien for your non beaten track restaurants, cafes, concerts, art, shops,...
Also, the oldest neighborhood of Marseille is called %26quot;Le Panier%26quot; on the right side of the port when facing towards the sea, on the side of city hall opposite of Notre Dame de la Garde. Walk the streets behind to see some great aspects of Marseill. Unless you like the danger iit is less recommended at night.
I also understand that there is a place to get the african/north african beat of Marseill food, music,...
I lived many years in Marseille and I am very fond of the city.

Sorry to come back but the other typical place in a whole other realm is %26quot;le Vallon des Auffes%26quot; small port like area with fisherman %26quot;shacks%26quot; no wbecome prize poseesions but still retains some true character of the city. Also go all the way to Les Goudes it is as far as you can get no glam little port, retarants, cafes...

You are welcome. If you have a minute, share you impressions after visiting.

While I love visiting Marseille every September for a wonderful mid-day meal ( Bouibaisse or something else equally wonderful) alongside the inner-harbour - in all honesty, Marseille is NOT a %26quot;day trip%26quot; if you are based in Paris.
Depending upon how long you intend to be in France, and, assuming that you intend to inclulde the southern parts of France in your visit, Marseille is a wonderful destination, but DO NOT EVEN THINK OF IT as a viable day-trip from Paris!
