Three of us are in the planning stages for visiting Bayeux in late November, for 2 nights and 2 1/2 days. Battlebus is only available for a one day tour at the time we will be visiting, and is our primary reason. We plan to rent a car in Paris as price seems comparable to train travel for 3, and a car offers more flexibility. I have contacted Reine Mathilde about lodging and am waiting to hear from them. The Churchill seems wonderful, but spending euros on dining is more important to us than on lodging! Somewhere in these forums I came across Le Pommier as an excellent restaurant. Can anyone please advise as to dining, lodging, auto vs train, etc. Thank you very much for any assistance!

Two years ago, three of us took a few days from our Paris trip and headed to Bayeux. Took the train, which was very easy. Stayed at the Churchill, which I highly recommend. Location can%26#39;t be beat, and the rooms were spotless and the staff were all extremely helpful. Did the Battlebus one day tour, which was excellent! And this was a 16 yr old girl, myself, and my mother. We had two very good meals, one at Le Petite Bistro and the other at La Fringale. La Fringale was our favoritte, even though the other tends to get more press.

Thank you very much! La Fringale is on my list as are Le Rapier and Les Delices D%26#39;Anthony, which seems to be recommended for lunch. The train is a good option but we do enjoy driving.

I really debated about driving. However, my mother had never been out of the country and I knew how bad it was to have her as a passenger here and I didn%26#39;t want to deal with it there, lol! Taking the train kept the peace:)

If you have a day to spare a car will give you the flexibility to explore a bit more of Normandy. There is so much more to the area than just Bayeux and the beaches, worthwhile as those are. Between Paris and Bayeux you could visit Château Gaillard, Rouen and Jumièges, just for starters.
Get your hands on the Michelin Green Guide to Normandy and you%26#39;ll be astonished at how much more time Normandy really deserves...

Thank you, we have found a very good car rental on Auto Europe and will probably spend Friday and Sunday seeing the sights between Paris and Bayeux. I will look into the guide for route information and have also heard there is lovely driving on the coast; we could do inland one way and coast the other. Thank you again for the recommendation.

We enjoyed Le Pommier when we dined there in July. It was not the best food we have ever had, but it was a nice restaurant with French/Norman cuisine---big prices--and getting bigger as the dollar sinks. My son had a traditional Norman dish listed on teh menu--I don%26#39;t recall the name in French, but it translated to something like %26quot;Foot, Guts, and Stomach%26quot;---it had a very pungent oder, and while authentic, he did not enjoy it.
If you have time, you should plan on a guided tour of the D-Day Invasion--BallteBus does a good job. Personally, I don%26#39;t think you can do a tour of the invasion sights justice on your own--helps to have an expert guide.
Have fun.

We really enjoyed Le Pommier - we were there in Feb 2008 and had a very nice meal. We stayed at a B%26amp;B on a park. Didn%26#39;t do a Battlebus Tour - just explored on our own. The other restaurant we ate at we by a water wheel and had some outdoor seating I think.
We drove from Paris and spent two nights - if I did it again I would take the train and pick up a car in Caen or Bayeux.

If battlebus can%26#39;t do what you wanted, for three of you a private guide in your rental car would be about the same price and could tailor your tour to your wishes.
If your driving from Paris to Bayeux in a day and want to visit places I wouldn%26#39;t try to drive along the coast, which implies Honfleur to Port en Bessin. It would make the 260 km journey very tiring. Use the motor way and branch off to places you want to visit. 2 visits at the most.
For car rental, have you looked at renting directly from the companies. I%26#39;m not convinced that Auto europe will give you a better deal. There%26#39;s rentacar, ada, renault rent, europcar, sixt
