Area cafes/meals w/in walking distance-St Germain? Others?

We am planning a short trip in January. Because of the what we expect the weather to be like, we would like to stay in an area close to many cafes and restaurants so that we can easily walk to breakfast and dinner. We have no problem taking the metro for touring but think it would be easier to walk to meals. Is St Germain-des-Pres a good area for this? It appears that this areas has some pedestian areas good for walking - is this true? Any other areas that would be good?

Any restaurant suggestions? Hoping for something reasonable (not even sure how much this might mean we would need to spend)

Any hotel/larger B%26amp;B suggestians for a budget of $200-$250?

Thanks so much.

I stayed in St Germain in January %26#39;08. It wasn%26#39;t too cold (in fact some days I had to take my coat off during the day), and I walked almost everywhere.

I was in rue de Seine, in the section between Bvd St Germain and the river, near rue Bucci (look it up on Google maps). There were so many places to eat there you won%26#39;t have a problem. All the restaurants have to display their menus in the window/outside, so you can just walk around and take your pick depending on what you feel like. I%26#39;m afraid I didn%26#39;t actually eat in any restaurants in that area (for a variety of reasons), so can%26#39;t give you any recommendations.

I stayed at La Louisiane but I was on a tight budget (€80/night) - it was fine although my room was very small (I wasn%26#39;t there much). But it doesn%26#39;t have a lot of facilities that people from the US expect, and I think for your budget you%26#39;ll doubtless get lots of suggestions re other hotel (and restaurants).

I spent 10 days in St. Germain a few years back -- it has everything you%26#39;ll need in terms of restaurants, shopes, and just a great, colorful environment. I%26#39;d suggest you try to find a hotel in the area bounded by the Seine, Blvd. St Germain, Blvd St. Michel, and Rue Bonaparte. This is the %26quot;best of the best%26quot; IMO -- I%26#39;m currently putting together plans for what hopefully will be a 30 day stay there next Spring -- it%26#39;s that impressive. Enjoy!

I%26#39;ve stayed in this neighborhood almost annually since 1981 and there are plenty of places to walk to to get a meal.

As for hotel recommendations, I%26#39;d suggest that you go over to www.fodors.com and then type in %26quot;Paris Hotels Left Bank Thread%26quot; in the %26quot;Search%26quot; box. I have a whole thread there and there are a LOT of suggestions from folks and it%26#39;s all organized under two separate threads, Left Bank%26quot; and %26quot;Right Bank%26quot;. I%26#39;ll top it for you.

If you have any questions about the area, or hotels after you%26#39;ve researched them, then leave a personal message to me here on tripadvisor in the %26quot;Message%26quot; section. Happy Travels!
