Lyon trip

I am trying to plan a trip w/my husband and 16yr son to Lyon and surroundings next March. We will be visiting my daughter who will be teaching in Lyon for the year. I have another daughter who will be studying in Freiburg, Germany. We have never been to Lyon so I am sure we will spend some days there, but I was hoping to travel to Germany to visit my other daughter. Is this a terrible time of year to travel between these areas(car or train) due to weather. Please suggest itinerary ideas for 10-14 days. We like exploring and are experianced travelers. We have not been to this area of France or germany. We have never been to Switzerland and I need help tying things together

Thanks!

Last winter was exceptionally cold in Lyon, but I was able to travel around without problems (by train). I guess it also depends on where you go. I would be more concern with transportation strikes, which happen a lot in France.

Lyon%26#39;s small and can easily be discovered in 3-4 days. I highly recommend taking a day trip to Vienne, it%26#39;s a beautiful city near Lyon with Roman ruins and great history.

Some people like Perouges (a medieval town 1/2 hour from Lyon), but it is overrated to me.

If you like wine, you can rent a car and drive to the Beaujoulais region, again less than 1 hour from Lyon. Hope this helps :)

Well in March you may have snow but the routes around Lyon are usually kept clear if it snows there at all (Lyon is at quite a low altitude) so you should not have any real problems provided that you accept that no-one can predict the weather and that if bad weather does happen we sometimes have to adapt our plans. Getting from Lyon to Freiburg is only a 4 hour drive so again I can%26#39;t see any great difficulty. You can get around easily by train but if you want more flexibility a car will always offer advantages.

If you are hiring a car in Lyon I recommend that you specify in your booking that it be fitted with winter tyres (pneus hiver) - these are required equipment at that time of year in Germany and will be helpful if it does snow or you choose to venture into the mountains.

If you look at www.viamichelin.com you will see that it has a useful route-planner that you can use to plan your itinerary. There are many interesting places that are easily accessible from Lyon and Lyon itself is lovely.

Enjoy your trip.

You can get from Lyon to Freiburg by train, if you do not fancy winter driving. There are several trains a day direct from Lyon to Mulhose, although there you would have to change on to Bale and there for another train to Freibourg. It may be possible to cut out a bit of this by catching a bus from Mulhouse to the Airport and then on from there to Freiburg.
