I never read the messages about the gold ring scams and so guess what...i got scammed.
I guy about 30 years old appeared in front of me to be picking up a gold ring that looked like he found right in front of my feet while I was taking a picture..so I couldn%26#39;t see him drop it before he picked it up.
THe ring is thick but very light, and has a 18K stamped on to it.
He held it up and tried it on his fingers and it didnt fit him so he tried it on mine. He said I could have it and that it was my lucky day. He left but then turned around and came right back to me.
He spoke some English so that put me off gaurd. He asked me in if I had any change to give him for coffee and so I gave him some coins in my pocket because I felt guilty that he didnt keep the ring and gave it to me. But then he stared at the coins like they were not enough and he asked if I had some more. Since I felt like I had potentially an expensive ring I gave him 10 euros. He asked me if I could give him 20 to which I said NO!. He thanked me and left.
The next day, while we were walking a women walking towards us suddenly held up a ring to her face and stared at it and said, %26quot;WOW%26quot; as if she just found it. That%26#39;s when we realized that we had certainly been scammed.
I only lost about 10 euros but you could lose more if you are not aware and are off guard.

I am at a bit of a loss here. I understand why you feel that is a scam; I assume you would have felt it was Ok to keep the ring if it had been a valuable piece of jewellery even though you knew it wasn%26#39;t yours.

Money was taken from me by cheating. This is called a scam by definition. Regardless of what I may have been or may not have been thinking is besides the point.
Once again, money was taken by cheating. This is called a scam.
|||
It%26#39;s hard to believe that this popular scam actually works, but it does because people are greedy.

And if the thick ring had been 18K gold, you would have got it for €10. Isn%26#39;t that cheating too?
|||
Why did you not give the ring back instead of handing over money?
You knew the ring wasn%26#39;t yours, but then at this stage you did think you had something potentially expensive....just greed and the scammers love people like you.

We had this one happen to us whilst walking along the river towards the eiffel tower area. Nice girl, very believable... but ultimately obvious it was a scam when we handed her back the ring and told her to sell it herself if she needed money, and she ran off faster than the speed of light.
The moral of the story is, if you look like a tourist and someone comes up to you with a story that seems too good to be true, it usually is. Watch your bag if you come across this one again!

I don%26#39;t think I would ever be %26quot;off guard%26quot; enough to take something (like an %26quot;expensive ring%26quot;) offered by someone I didn%26#39;t know, on the street.
If you felt like you had %26quot;potentially an expensive ring%26quot; perhaps you should have suggested that he turn said ring in to the police.
You can only be scammed if you think you are getting something for (almost) nothing ...
Just my opinion.

This is hilarious....I appreciate you %26quot;warning%26quot; us of this, but seriously...use some common sense. We were in Italy recently and some guys were walking around with roses, handing them out to women, telling them they could keep the roses because you were beautiful....then they would come up to your husband and demand money....I was caught off guard and my husband instantly said %26quot;give it back%26quot; which I was in the process of...it happens that quick... DUH! Nothing is for free, especially from generous seeming street folks. You sort of told on yourself here...you weren%26#39;t exactly honest and ready to give the ring back were you?...Until you found out it was a scam. Having said that...I am sorry you were scammed.

Big mistake. You should always read these posts, would have saved you €10.
%26quot;He held it up and tried it on his fingers and it didnt fit him so he tried it on mine.%26quot;
What did you do? Hold out your finger for him to put it on to. I mean thats just stupid. If anyone I didn%26#39;t know went to put something on my finger I would snatch my hand back and walk away.
In all honesty, €10 is nothing these days, just live and learn and move on.
