As a Francophile who travels often to Paris, I just received an email from Air France stating that they will charge 50 US dollars for a second check -in bag.
I just returned from Europe last month with Delta and they charged me for the second check in bag. I usually fly with AF if I can help it. I expect the worst from American carriers so if any exceptional service happens, I would be happy and grateful. I was mad at Delta but my thought was, %26quot;well, it is an American carrier so suck it up!%26quot;.
I am fond of AF and almost always receive great service with AF. I hope that AF will not follow American carriers trying to cut every corner with the service. What do my fellow wanderlusts think of this AF%26#39;s recent change? Seems like there are other complains about AF in some of the current postings.

I try to keep all my domestic and international travel on American Airlines and because I have elite status with them, I am not charged for a second bag. I have had nothing but great service from them.

Hi Nancy,
Elite Status holders do get some perks. I just recently lost mine. Of the three years I had elite status, I did not receive much from Delta. They were a bit more forgiving if my bags exceed weigh limits, however.

Just for the record...I am NOT as blonde as it might seem. That blasted Facebook feature makes me CRAZY! It locked me in on my PDA and every time I tried to cancel it, it sent the reply again. Does anyone even like that TA added it?

I tried to post the following:
NO!
which was my response to nancyleemo%26#39;s %26quot;does anybody...%26quot;
Which got me the following -- in red letters on a pink background, I might add.
%26quot;Please correct the following errors
- Message body cannot be all in CAPITAL LETTERS%26quot;
That%26#39;s one more %26quot;improvement%26quot; that I hate.

I got that email too. I thought AF was not bad, but over the years I%26#39;ve slowly lost confidence in them especially when they recently deleted our FF bookings via Continental Airlines and never took the rightful blame. Someone else on our flight complained that they bumped his booking (non-FF) too. So this latest $50 (or 50 euro for flights departing from Europe) for a second checked bag doesn%26#39;t make them any more endearing to me. Well, that%26#39;s just my opinion. I just hope the other European-based airlines don%26#39;t copy, but that%26#39;s probably more likely than not.

Elite Status holders are not affected by Air France last surcharge...For now...
And for us, in San Francisco, Air France is stil the only airline flying direct/non-stop.
|||
I believe the change is so that Air France has the same policy as Delta and KLM, now that the three have a revenue alliance for all trans-Atlantic flights.
They previously had code share and frequent flyer agreements but now have entered into an agreement to divvy up the flights, costs, profits etc. on those routes so I would think they want to mimic one another%26#39;s fees, etc.

Hi SDWanderlust,
I do commiserate with you. But we have to face the present reality - Airline revenues have been hit by the effects of recession which have drastically reduced travel . On the other hand ,prices of aviation fuel have shot up.It will not be long before other airlines follow suit.

PS. I recently flew on Air France flights from Mumbai to Paris and back and was happy with its services ( both in-flight and at the airports ).
