Thinking of doing a little tour of France next year, taking in the Loire valley and then travelling over to La Rochelle or nearby. Can anyone suggest a route and recommend hotels/ gites suitable for a couple. We will be travelling over in the eurotunnel and plan to take 2 weeks to do our trip. Any ideas and suggestions would be gratefully received.

The easiest route from Calais is to take the A16 and then the A28 motorways down to Tours. That way you avoid having to go through or around Paris. www.viamichelin..com is good for planning routes. Total driving time without stops is about 5 hours.
Somewhere around the Touraine area is a good base to explore the Loire Valley, being central for many of the Chateau.
From Tours down to La Rochelle is just over two hours using the A10 motorway and then the N11.
I own a gite in the Loire Valley, which may meet your requirements. I will PM you with the details.

Are you deliberately avoiding a sea crossing? I ask because Folkestone and Calais is a long detour between Wales and the Loire when you could go from Portsmouth to a number of ports in Normandy (Cherbourg, Caen or Le Havre). Have a look at the Brittany Ferries and LD Lines websites.

Try this for route planning -
www.viamichelin.com
It will also flag up hotels.
Gites are usually for a one week stay. Google Gites de France for their website, but there are plenty of other providers - Chez Nous, Bowhills etc. If you were looking for hotel accommodation then logis de france are worth looking at (it%26#39;s an association of independent hotels with ratings for levels of comfort and food quality). http://www.logis-de-france.fr/fr/index.htm
