Lyon with 15 year old

We plan to spend two days in Lyon in September 2010 with our 15 year old son who wants to go to Lyon %26quot;for the food%26quot;. Would like recommendations for a couple of bouchons/brasseries for dinner. One Lyon - do you still recommend Le Sud? and Hotel Celestin. Are they close to each other. Also, what else in Lyon might interest a 15 year old boy.

Hand your 15 year old a guide book and ask him to make a wish list as he goes through the Lyon section. You may be surprised by the things that interest him. It%26#39;s by far the surest way of planning an itinerary with elements that he will enjoy.

To advise we have to know what type of cuisine do you like (I personally don%26#39;t fancy the local cuisine), what%26#39;s your price range and whether you%26#39;re ready to move from the city centre to have a dinner.

Concerning Le Sud, yes it still serves quality Mediterranean cuisine - I%26#39;ve been there just recently and tried the Marmite du Pecheur.

Thank you for responding IBC and Darth Feanor. Regarding cuisine, my 15 yo %26quot;foodie%26quot; probably wouldn%26#39;t be keen on the tripe etc (nor would I). More classic French with a modern twist if there%26#39;s such a thing.

OK, here%26#39;s my selection of the central located spots, which I frequently visit myself.

Lower-medium price range:

1. Aux 3 Gaules - rather simple bouchon in the Croix Rousse area. Open late on Thursdays to Saturdays. Live music on week-ends. Simple, but tasty food, very generous quantities. Local cuisine with Medeterranean influance. Salade Lyonnaise is delicious. 7-13 euros per meal.

Medium price range:

1. Au 6 Chez les Gones - bouchon in the Bellecour area on the Rue des Marronniers. Very savoury local cuisine. Set menu 12-22 euros.

2. Le 9 Merciere - French cuisine facon a la plancha. Try Les pennes aux Morilles ou Saint Jaques a la Plancha. This restaurant IS NOT on a pedestrian part of the street, it is further north.

3. Le Layon - seafood restaurant on a pedestrian part of the Merciere street. Jazzy ambiance, good fish.

P.S. On the Merciere street there are many tourist traps. In particular - Chez Moss and Saint Joseph, don%26#39;t go there.

4. Aux Trois Maries - very interisting spot in the Vieux Lyon area, that also normally sets a lot of traps for the tourists. I adored Seabass and Meat made in the sauce Saint Marcelin as the main course.

5. Also in the Vieux Lyon area - La nef des fous, small restaurant on the Rue de Boeuf. Better make a reservation.

6. Un Petit tour en Camargue - that is a concept restaurant in the Croix Rousse area, which serves ONLY ONE set menu, which consists of 10 smallish starters ant 10 small main courses. The idea is to give you a chance to try the cuisine of Provence. Interisting experience.

Upper medium range price

1. Brasserie George in the Perrache area. Well, that is obviously a tourist attraction, but it definetely worth a visit. Cuisine tends to represent the North and North East of France. Choukrouts, snails, etc. If you like the steak tartar, here it is one of the best in Lyon.

2. Le Sud - well, Paul Bocuse Brasserie. You know about it already.

3. Restaurant d%26#39;Olivier - Provencal restaurant in the Massena area. Open from 20.00 in the evening.

High range price (Michelin stars)

1. Le Gourmet de Seze - not far from d%26#39;Olivier in the Massena area. To me - it%26#39;s arguably the best restaurant in Lyon. http://www.le-gourmet-de-seze.com/

2. Le relais gourmand Pierre Orsi. Also a fantastic but expensive restaurant in the Massena area. http://www.pierreorsi.com/

3. La mere Brazier - restaurant is placed next to Un Petit tour en Camargue in the Croix Rousse area. It was very good a couple of years ago, but now I read not so optimistic review about it.

This is but a small selection. The number of good restaurants is much bigger. You can make your own choice on spot. Just look where the locals eat and avoid mostly touristic areas.

Oh,yes I forgot - if you want to taste good Atlantic oysters you have to go to Les Halles halls near Part Dieu train station to the bar-restaurant Chez Leon. You can just order at a bar a plate of oysters with a glass of white wine. …cityvox.fr/restaurants_lyon/…Profil-Lieu

Not to mention that Les Halles worth a visit just by themselves. It%26#39;s the main Lyon%26#39;s market.
