We are visiting Provence in the Spring. We originally planned to stay in Avignon and visit different spots (Arles, St. Remy, maybe Aix) by train.
Now we%26#39;re wondering whether it would make more sense to stay perhaps 3 nights in Avignon and 3 in Arles. Does this make sense or should we stick to the original plan? Maybe the second base should be somewhere other than Arles??
We will need to take the train back to CDG to continue our vacation in Paris. Ideas welcome. Merci.

Hi FancynancyPittsburgh! Avignon to Arles is only 1 hour so my suggestion is that for such a short distance don%26#39;t bother changing. If you want to change base, try Aix-en-Provence?

Thank you, Lou. Nice to hear from you again. As you can see, I found the Provence forum. We were all set to stay in Avignon and then my sister suggested we break it up.

Western Provence is relatively compact so you can easily establish a single base for your entire stay. Personally, in order to get the most out of your stay I suggest that you seriously consider renting a car, as it will enable you to explore at your leisure, without having to adhere to train schedules - it will also allow you to visit all of the lovely places that have no train stations.
Personally, I would urge you to consider someplace like St. Remy as your base, or if you want a smaller Provencal town experience, perhaps someplace nearby like Maussane-les-Alpilles. Both are lovely, have a number of wonderful restaurants, are near to important historical sites, and have wonderful Provencal ambiance. While I would absolutely recommend that you visit both Avignon and Arles, personally, I wouldn%26#39;t recommend either as a base.

Completely agree with AlpillesGal regarding your base. Also if you want to see a different piece of Provence maybe Vaison-la-Romaine as a second base.

The advantage of Avignon is that if you choose not to rent a vehicle (I do agree that it is best to do so) you will have many more options for public transportation to and from Avignon. I do not know how many buses a day go from Maussane les Alpille to Les Baux de Provence for example, however charming both places are.
Then it really depends on what you like best. I love Avignon, it is a small city rather than a village, but a lot more to do and see.
