Students on a budget first time to Paris

My son and his girlfriend are off to Europe from Australia for Christmas. As it is their first trip they are very excited, but absolutely in the dark about where to stay in Paris. They have very limited funds! Any suggestions please?

You%26#39;re going to have to give more info, like dates of travel, budget, preferences in terms of shared bathroom or not, etc. There%26#39;s a thread here entitled %26quot;Give us the tools%26quot; that will pretty much tell you what info to post on queries in order to help the people that want to give you answers.

Oh dear! it does look like I have put my foot it it.

and I can see what you%26#39;re getting at. They are hoping to get to Paris on the 4th Jan 2010 and stay for around 4 days. They are young, fit and don%26#39;t mind walking. Shared bathrooms is not a problem as they have both lived in college residences, but somewhere clean would be good.

They do not speak any french so a helpful hostel/hotel staff is on the list too!

any help is much appreciated. This is all new to me and I find it fascinating that people from all over the world can chip in with comments.

JackyJacky - can you give us a maximum spend per night that they%26#39;re able/willing to pay?

|||

Around A$60 to $80 max.

Is this impossible?

I just returned from Paris and I stayed at the Marignan Hotel in the Latin Quarter. A single was 51 euros. The rooms were immaculate if a bit on the shabby no frills side. The staff was nice and spoke English. Its less than a block from the metro. Breakfast is included. There is no elevator and you do have to share bathrooms, but I would definitely stay there again. You can reserve on line too.

For those not familiar with the $A, we%26#39;re talking about €35 - €48 (at current exchange rates, which are as good as they%26#39;ve been for almost 2 years).

A poster whose screen name is arvind13 (I think..) mentioned this hotel earlier today in a thread that I cannot locate. It is in a very good location though not %26quot;central%26quot; but the important thing is that it is close to a métro station served by three lines. The €44 rate for a twin room with en suite facilities would be hard to beat and is probably better than the youngsters could do in a dorm room in a hostel. I don%26#39;t know anything about the quality of the hotel but a PM to the original poster should produce some information.

IrishRover - for some reason JackyJacky has two separate posts going on the same subject.

Arvind13 has suggested this hotel in the other thread - probably where you saw it, and didn%26#39;t realise it was the same topic. :) :

Hi JackyJacky,

You may check out my thread mentioned by kiwi-di.

I have stayed at two hotels in Paris - Hotel Champerret Heliopolis,16eme and at Alfa Nation. A detailed review will be very lengthy, suffice to say that Alfa is value-for-money vis-a-vis price.

Thanks, IrishRovr for getting my screen name right.

I am an Internet Dummy. How does one locate the thread number of a particular post ?

I hate when that happens. My apologies to all concerned...

arvind - You can use the search feature above the posts and search on one or more keywords. Frankly it%26#39;s one of the clunkiest search engines around. I wish someone at TA would build an advanced search feature. When you%26#39;re looking for some specific piece of information in thousands of pages it is really indispensable to have a robust search feature.

If you are looking for a thread to which you yourself have contributed, the easiest thing to do is probably to click on your own name. That will bring up a list of all your recent posts from which you can select the one you are looking for.
