From someone who lived in Europe from 1970 - 75:

Before TA

Before the Internet

Got brochures from travel agents, bought book called [country] on $5 %26quot;[later $10] a day%26quot; (lol), and mainly used travel agents to make bookings.

Also had a train timetable for Europe, and worked out myself how to get from A to B. It was a small pocketsized publication, and was my constant companion. There was also a huge (telephone book size) book which gave worldwide airline flight details. I used it often -(it might only have been available to businesses - we had one in the office) to work out all the options (just as one now does on the internet) and then got the travel agent to make the bookings.

Before cell phones

Didn%26#39;t think it was necessary to keep in touch, except in an emergency and then used a payphone

Before bank machines

Bought currency in destination country; used travellers cheques and then later used Eurocheques (cheques drawn on your own bank, but which you wrote out in the currency of the country you were in). They were the best thing since sliced bread. :)

Before GPS

Used road maps

Before digital cameras

Film camera - took the film home and had it processed there.

My addition: Before credit cards

Same answer as to %26quot;Before bank machines%26quot;.

Oops - missed before TA

Asked friends, took pot luck. Stayed in some pretty dodgy hotels - but hey, I was in my early 20s so it was all part of the life experience. :)

Ah, the good old days before the internet. I remember them well. When people actually talked to each other face to face...

Btw, you forgot Post It notes. I can%26#39;t live without Post It notes. You could wallpaper my living room with the stickies I have plastered against every surface in my world.
