Where to stay in Antibes?

Hi,

We are travelling to the Cote D%26#39;Azur from 26th June-11th July 2010 with 2 kids, aged 5 and 7 at time of travel. We are trying to find accommodation to suit the needs of the kids(pool, beach) and ourselves(quaint old town, cobbled streets and local restaurants). We have booked a week at an apartment in Domaine Juan Flore with pool/near the beach etc which will suit the kids for the first week and want to see more of Antibes the second week. We are looking at apartments in La Pleiade(Rue de Lit Militaer), an apartment near Rue D%26#39;Alger, an apartment in Place du Revely and another one in the Port Prestige complex with pool and view of the marina. Was wondering if anyone could tell us how far it is to walk to the old town from La Pleiade/Rue D%26#39;Alger, and if the streets are heavily-trafficked(thinking of our lively 5-year-old). Is it very noisy around the Port Prestige complex due to proximity to the port? If anyone has stayed there, have all the apartments been renovated or only some?

rue des Lits militaires is a pretty grim looking road and its pretty close to the train line at one end - i definitely wouldn%26#39;t choose it if i was wanting more of an old town cobbled street type week.,

Rue d%26#39;alger -pretty busy road - and cars get impatient on it

Port Prestige -is that withy pierre et vacances? check reviews thoroughly - it certainly can be hit or miss. I%26#39;ve known folk who have stayed there and had a great time and others who have had more of an iffy experience

The port itself isn%26#39;t noisy=its not containers and ferries-mostly pelasure craft from small to immense and a few fishing boats

Place du Revely - would be the nicest for atmosphere - its right in the old town -with all the oldest buildings and narrow streets with flowers and window boxes etc and close to la gravette beach -which is really nice for kids

Forgot to mention - rue d%26#39;alger would be about 15-20 mins to old town /10 mins to port

Rue des lits militaire - add another 5-10 mins on to the rue d%26#39;alger times.

it depends how quick you and the kids walk.

Thanks for very useful info regarding location and distance to Old town. Have read reviews for Pierre et vacances at Port Prestige and many people say that the pools are not suitable for young kids unless they are confident swimmers, so probably not good for us. So it%26#39;s down to the place du Revely or a town house I found located at Rue du Marc, in the old town. Just need to find out from the owner how close it is to the bus station and small supermarket, as we prob won%26#39;t bother hiring a car as we%26#39;ve heard driving and parking there in July is not advisable due to traffic congestion, shame since it would have been nice to visit some of the villages inland.

Rue du marc is at the bottom or Rue Fersen so beside a large college [high school] - school will be winding down end of june though

Its probably less than 10 mins to bus station and there are small supermarkets on edge of old town and larger super markets another 5 mins walking.

Quite a nice alternativey-arty shoppping area there but less picture postcard and its a relatively newer part of the old town. [The old town of Antibes started up on the rock beside the castle and then spread outside that initial fortified area later -so the place du reveley is from an earlier phase.]

Really anywhere in the old town is easy walking to the bus station and supermarkets = I lived in various places in old Antibes when my kids were small , without a car and never had any problems.

Being besde the old town gives easy access to the provencal produce market too [every day except monday]

Rue de Marc is genuinely old town Antibes and just a step away from everything. Only about 5 mins walk to 3 supermarkets - Rober ( more expensive but with a great popular butcher), and the larger and more competitively priced Champion and Intermarche .

Ed- i wasn%26#39;t saying rue du Marc was not in the old town - just that its not in the oldest and most atmospheric and picturesque part of the old town - which may be important to the OP

Sorry selkieNice - wasnt meant to be any kind of a contradiction to you as I hadnt read your post first. The way things come out in this stilted means of communication. I fully agree with you Rue du Marc is slightly newer old town as opposed to say around the Cathedral but none the worse for that and a good very well placed and convenient choice ( for atmosphere, shopping, beach etc) for duntiblaesnob.
