I%26#39;ve seen warnings from folks saying the RER makes several stops in some dicey neighborhoods outside of Paris on its way into the city (I thought it was more or less direct from CDG to Gare du Nord?) and that there%26#39;s lots of robberies and muggings on the train. True?
|||
no,absolutely not. It is crowded, but I just left Paris earlier this month and took the train to and from the airport and never felt there was any risk.. Yes, the train makes several stops,but i wouldn
%26#39;t say any of the stops are in bad locations

Personally, I think that%26#39;s an exaggeration, but I don%26#39;t take this route regularly Perhaps someone who does can respond on this important topic.
I do know that there are RER trains from CDG which make several stops before reaching the Gare du Nord and I think those stops are in seedy areas. However, when I have taken those trains, I can%26#39;t say that I%26#39;ve felt threatened nor have I heard of any violence on those particular trains. I do opt for the trains which have Gare du Nord as their first stop just to avoid those areas though. These trains have the letter %26quot;K%26quot; in their name (express to Gare du Nord). I travel solo and don%26#39;t take unnecessary chances anywhere in the world.

We just did this run into Paris in early August 2009 and had no issues.
We also did the return trip in the evening from Paris for we stayed at the excellent Marriott at Charles de Gaulle, and had no issues.

The story that empty3nest has posted repeated links to is, on its face, improbable at best.
No, the RER from CDG is not dangerous. However, if you are concerned about it every second train from the airport into the city is an express that has no stops prior to Gare du Nord. Just check the lighted destination boards above the platforms to see where the train stops. At worst you will have to wait perhaps an extra 7 or 8 minutes.

IrishRovr, can you tell us how we can distinguish if it%26#39;s an express train? I am not too familiar with the RER. In the destination board, will it just say next stop is Gare du Nord? Because in some stations I%26#39;ve been to (not Paris), it just shows the final destination of the train so you know if you are going at the right direction.

%26#39;..horror stories..%26#39;---are difficult to confirm or deny...and their invidious %26#39;..beauty..%26#39; is that even when the %26#39;..horror story..%26#39; is incontrovertibly proven to be nothing more than %26#39;bovine excrement%26#39;, spread as thickly and widely as possible by pathetic %26#39;..anoymorons..%26#39;....their residual %26#39;..stink..%26#39; still persists.
There%26#39;s just enough of the barest kernel of %26#39;..truth..%26#39; to the notion that the northern, suburban spur of the RER %26#39;B%26#39; ligne may be unsafe. It has experienced some occasional problems over the years. The ligne passes through an area of surburban Paris that experienced well reported riots a few years ago. But oddly enough, during that period of major social unrest in the area, there were NO--ZERO--incidents of violence on the RER %26#39;B%26#39; ligne....no violence against foreign tourists...nor against local residents.
The RER %26#39;B%26#39; ligne has experienced reports of occasional petty-crimes-of-opportunity over the years---pickpockets, bag %26#39;snatches%26#39;, etc. Physical violence inflicted on tourists transfering between CDG and Paris (or the sort of %26quot;..beating..%26quot; reported in otherwise anonymous postings to un-edited, anonymous internet forums) have ***NOT*** factored into it. But...since the %26#39;B%26#39; ligne passes through an area where the ever dangerous %26#39;..they/them/those people..%26#39; (pick any fear-mongering pejorative you like) live...it%26#39;s always easy to trade on mis-perception...under the general malignant theme: %26#39;..even if it there isn%26#39;t a shred of truth to it...it damn well could/might be..%26#39;.
So the answer to your question is that you will be ***JUST FINE*** riding either a %26#39;..local..%26#39; (%26#39;B%26#39; trains with a four-letter, %26#39;..Pxxx..%26#39; train designation) making intermediate stops between CDG and GARE du NORD or %26#39;express..%26#39; (%26#39;B%26#39; trains with four-letter %26#39;..Kxxx..%26#39; train designations) skipping most or all of the intermediate suburban stations between CDG and GARE du NORD.....You will both be and %26#39;feel%26#39; safer riding any RER %26#39;B%26#39; train than you might be walking across the parking lot of almost any local shopping mall in California...in broad daylight.
RER %26#39;B%26#39; trains run on a frequency from CDG run at a frequency of approx. 1-train-every 6-7 minutes during most of the day and evening. The %26#39;..Kxxx..%26#39; %26#39;express trains run on a frequency of approx 1-every-15 minutes. %26#39;Kxxx%26#39; express trains will get you to Paris four(4) minutes faster than %26#39;Pxxx%26#39; local trains. So if it really bothers you all that much...simply wait a couple of extra minutes at the CDG RER departure platform for a %26#39;Kxxx%26#39; express. It%26#39;ll add no more than a few minutes to the transfer.

A picture being worth a thousand words I will give you two pics and a lot more useful stuff and save the 2,000 words for another occasion. Click on the link and scroll about one-fourth of the way down the page to the heading %26quot;RER B Stations Panel.%26quot; You will see both the new and old types. You%26#39;ll find these panels on all RER platforms. I think the pics are self-explanatory.

IrishRovr,
Thanks so much for the link! I was looking for a website something like this where they have comprehensive info and pictures about train stations. Thanks!
