Off to Paris just after Chrimbo

Any particular recommendations for things that are especially good at that time of year. I went last year at the same time and of course hit a super-cold snap, so I know all about the museums and art galleries. But what do you like doing in cold weather in Paris?

What the heck is Chrimbo. (I hope you don%26#39;t mean %26quot;Christmas%26quot;)

|||

Travelnutty - I fear she does!

|||

Doesn%26#39;t matter how cold it is as long as it isn%26#39;t both raining AND blowing a gale Paris is still a joy to explore on foot. The parks are strangely beautiful and often almost deserted. You can see the architecture better when the tress are bare and the rows of pollarded trees in places like the Palais Royal are almost sculptural.

Of course there are the museums but more especially in winter the special exhibitions. The blockbuster Renoir show at the Grand Palais closes on 4 January. An advance purchase ticket would be a good plan. Here%26#39;s the link:

Then there%26#39;s the Rodin/Matisse show at the Musée d%26#39;Orsay. Those are the biggies, but there are plenty of others.

And of course there%26#39;s nothing wrong with finding a cosy café and taking over a corner table in the window for an hour or two...

|||

I didn%26#39;t much care for %26quot;Chrimbo%26quot; either but have a great trip anyway! We%26#39;ll be following you in Jambo... ;-)

|||

ChicChantal - Nice to see that you have a trip planned. You too, Irish.

|||

Thanks, Shoesy. Really looking forward to it, though we won%26#39;t be in Paris very long.

I didn%26#39;t mention the opera/ballet/theater as another great winter option thinking that those were rather obvious. Another option is the Christmas fairs that you will find scattered here and there. IIRC there is one at Bastille and another near St. Paul but they%26#39;re all over. I was reminded about those because I just got wind of a big indoor Christmas fair at he Grand Palais but I haven%26#39;t had time to scope it out yet. I%26#39;ll post again if it seems like something worthwhile...

This from the Grand Palais web site just for you Chantal:

%26quot;This year at the Grand Palais, festivity will be a central theme, a leitmotiv running through a succession of the most eclectic and joyous events. For the Christmas period (December 22 -31), the Nave will be home to merry-go-rounds, fairground attractions and all sorts of games, as Jours de Fêtes returns to the Grand Palais four years after the inaugural edition in 2005. An event for all the family, with a carousel dating back to 1900, special areas earmarked for the very young, and live music with a focus on jazz.%26quot;

Among the pile of mags I picked up on Eurostar was a Figaro special about an exhibition at Versailles:

%26lt;%26lt; Louis XIV, man and king, 20 october 2009 – 7 february 2010

For the first time, a major exhibition is devoted to Louis XIV, the king’s personality, his personal tastes.%26gt;%26gt;

Might be worth a look - the illustrations are dripping in crimson and gold!

%26#39;Chrimbo%26#39; has been in common usage in the UK for at least 15 years. That and %26#39;Chrimble%26#39;. Clearly it hasn%26#39;t crossed the Atlantic yet. Or rather hadn%26#39;t till you read my post!

And thanks for the suggestions everyone, esp Diz. Do you know I%26#39;ve never been in the palace of Versailles? Have been round the gardens a couple of times, but I%26#39;m more a garden than a house person. Maybe I%26#39;ll do it this time.
