As I am sorting out the notes for out trip this weekend, I would like to have a concise list of places that offer a great view over the city....as well as the best time of day to catch a sunset or sunrise view, if you know which way it faces....opening hours etc...
So far, I have:
Arab Institute
Arc d%26#39;Triomphe
Tower Montparnasse
Notre Dame
Trocaderro (outside and also there is a cafe in one of the buildings?)
Is it Printemps with the rooftop terrace?
I would really like to get some colorfull photos over the rooftops of Paris this trip....

You can get sunrise/sunset times with a forecast at www.weather.com or www.accuweather.com
Galeries Lafayette has a huge rooftop terrace, but it%26#39;s seasonal. Just take the escalators to the top.
Cafe de la Pont, quai du Louvre, is a terrific place to watch the sun set.
There are several cafes at Place du Trocadero with views to the Tour Eiffel from sidewalk tables.
Views from the Panoramic Bar at Hotel Concorde Lafayette are spectacular! Drinks are pricey.
Another great place to watch the sun rise or set is from the steps in front of Sacre Coeur.
A terrific spot for photos over the rooftops of Paris (and the Tour Eiffel, Eglise du Dome, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, etc.) is the roof of Tour Montparnasse.
My favorite spot for photos, though, is the second level of the Tour Eiffel.

The roof top terrace at the Printemps should give you pretty much a 360 deg. view and not too high so lots of interesting detail.

The top of the Buttes Chaumont park and the upper end of the Parc de Belleville, both in the 19th arrondissement, have excellent views of Paris.

The terrace at roof level at the Pompidou Centre has a good view over the rooftops of the square towards Montmartre on one side and round to the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame on the corner. We went up years ago, when it was free and there was a cheapish cafe up there - I remember sitting having a coffee and being amazed at the view. We went back recently and it costs 3€ to ride the escalators to the viewpoint but we skipped the restaurant - this time I was amazed at the prices!
