Hello,
I am planning a vacation, going from Paris to Annecy by train, staying in Annecy for one night, and then going to the swiss alps (to go skiing). Can anyone offer advice on the best way to get from Annecy to the alps? Would it be better to just take the train to Geneva? What is the best (and easiest to get to) ski area?
thanks!

Do you have a particular area/town in mind for skiing? The Alps cover many different regions. Annecy is quite close to Chamonix which is a good ski area too.

Actually, I don%26#39;t know much about skiing in the area, so I was wondering what the best place to ski in is - not too expensive, good for beginners, and good restaurants/bars. But more importantly, something that is convenient to get to from Paris and beautiful. Is it best to travel by train or bus? Thanks!

Well there%26#39;s lots to choose from. Chamonix is v.pretty and is outstanding for advanced skiers, but I don%26#39;t know what it is like for beginners/moderate skiers - someone who knows the slopes there better can tell you more.
I do know Meribel and Courchevel (France) are very good for skiers of all abilities, are attractive resorts and are part of the 3 Vallees ski area which provide a huge domain for advanced skiers as well as plenty of slopes for beginners/moderates. They are accessed via the TGV from Paris to Moutiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains, and then via a connecting skibus or taxi (it%26#39;s about 30 mins drive). Each has its own website. For trains check out http://www.voyages-sncf.com/ which is the French railways website.
The resorts will be open from the second weekend in December until just after Easter. the best snow tends to come in late Jan/Feb although in recent years there have also been significant falls around Easter time.
Annecy is v.pretty but it%26#39;s a different proposition in the winter time, when the wind is whipping off the lake, to the summer-time. Whether you think it worth a visit in the wintertime depends on what you were expecting to do there, I guess.
If you want to know about Swiss ski resorts I suggest that you ask in the Swiss forum, but I have the feeling that the best are some way to the east of Geneva, since the hills to the north of Geneva are fairly low and it is bordered by the lake to the south and east - happy to be corrected, however.
